Request RentalGeneral Fishing Gear Rental
While our primary focus is conquering the frozen lakes during the heart of winter, PolarGear Rental also offers a robust selection of general cold-weather fishing gear suitable for late fall and early spring excursions. Navigating cold waters requires specialized equipment that won't seize up or become brittle when the temperature drops near freezing.
Our general gear rental pool includes specialized cold-weather spinning reels packed with anti-freeze lubricants, composite rods that maintain their parabolic bend in freezing temperatures, and heavy-duty tackle bags designed to shed water and sleet. We ensure that every piece of tackle you rent is rigged and ready for the demanding environment of off-season fishing.
If you are planning a trip right on the edge of the freeze, talk to us about our crossover gear packages. We provide the versatile equipment you need to transition smoothly from open water to hard water without missing a beat in your fishing season.
The Science of Ice Fishing Equipment
Ice fishing is an exercise in extreme micro-management of resources: heat, visibility, and spatial awareness. The specialized ice fishing equipment we rent is engineered specifically to address these challenges. Unlike standard fishing gear, ice gear must operate in a strictly vertical plane while enduring prolonged exposure to moisture and sub-zero air.
Take our thermal shelters, for instance. They are constructed with a tri-layer fabric system. The outer shell blocks wind and precipitation, the middle layer consists of high-loft insulation to trap radiant heat, and the inner layer reflects warmth back into the shelter. This scientific approach to insulation means you can fish comfortably in a t-shirt while a blizzard rages outside.
Similarly, our sonar systems are calibrated specifically for ice fishing (flasher mode). Because you are stationary, traditional side-scanning sonars are useless. Our flasher units provide instantaneous, un-delayed feedback of the water column directly below your hole, allowing you to see your tiny jig and the fish approaching it in real-time.
Usage Instructions & Safety Guidelines
Your safety on the ice is our highest priority. Please review these essential guidelines before operating our rental equipment.
Ice Safety First
Never assume ice is safe. Always verify ice thickness yourself before venturing out. A minimum of 4 inches of clear, solid ice is recommended for foot traffic, and considerably more for snowmobiles or vehicles. Always carry ice picks worn around your neck and a spud bar to test ice ahead of you.
Heater Ventilation
When using propane heaters inside insulated shelters, proper ventilation is absolutely critical to prevent carbon monoxide buildup. ALWAYS keep at least two ventilation flaps open on opposite sides of the shelter to create cross-ventilation. Keep the heater away from the fabric walls to prevent melting or fire hazards.
Auger Operation
Power augers have incredibly sharp blades and high-torque motors. Always remove the blade guard just before drilling and replace it immediately after. Ensure a firm footing, keep loose clothing away from the rotating shaft, and let the weight of the auger do the cutting—do not force it down.
Electronics Battery Care
Cold temperatures rapidly drain batteries. Keep sonar displays and lithium batteries off the direct ice if possible. If renting a camera or sonar unit, assure the transducer cable is not frozen into the ice before attempting to pull it up, as this can sever the line and ruin the equipment.
Our Maintenance Guarantee
Renting equipment shouldn't mean compromising on reliability. Between every rental, our certified technicians perform a rigorous multi-point inspection and cleaning process on every item in our inventory.
Auger blades are regularly swapped and sharpened to ensure they cut like butter. Shelters are erected in our drying room, inspected for tears, and treated with ozone to eliminate moisture and odors. Thermal suits are professionally laundered using specialized technical wash to maintain their waterproofing and breathable membranes.
Finally, all electronic batteries are cycle-tested to ensure they hold a full charge under cold loads. When you pick up gear from PolarGear Rental, it is quite literally as good as new, allowing you to focus entirely on the catch.
